I found a really cheap flight non-stop from New York to Paris on Air India (which isn't necessarily a lesser known airline, but I've never flown on it). Any thoughts on this particular airline--or some of the others that are lesser known but offer cheaper (and sometimes non-stop) deals?
I've snagged a couple good deals on Icelandair and Aer Lingus. And I especially recommend using Priceline.com for US to Europe flights if you have flexible dates - I got a $250 round trip to Paris using them!
I'd recommend connecting either in London or Iceland to find the best fares, rather than a direct flight to Paris. And usually for US to Europe flights you'll be on an overnight flight, so there's less of a chance of really weird departure times.
I found a $250 ticket by using my favorite model: do a search on kayak.com to find their lowest price. Then subtract about 25% - 40% and use that as your bid price on Priceline.com. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but when it does it's great!
taking a connecting flight, or stopping in the major cities using continental can be a good idea too. i got a $500 roundtrip ticket to berlin during the summer season.
Your original question though, is about Air India. It's totally legit and completely safe. I haven't flown it myself, but I know several people who have. xxxbody ever raves about it (the way that you hear people raving about Air France or sometimes Virgin), but I think Air India is known to have lots of cheap ticket prices.
I don't know about Priceline. I don't really like the "name your own price" model, because yes, you can wind up with a cheap flight, but you lose control over what time and what airline you fly. xxxt knowing if I'm going to take off at 5 AM is too risky for me. I'd rather just fly on a less expensive airline and know all the details upfront.
