xxxd morning fellow travelers. I am planing a trip around Europe with some friends and I am looking to stay in hostels at night because of the limitet budget. What I would like to know is how do hostels work? Do I HAVE to book in advance or can I just stay for as much time as I like? Is there an hour that the hostel closes and you have to be back by then (father tells me that back in the 60's the door would lock around 23:00)? Is it safe (eheh)? Thanks in advance for any answers ;)
Good questions. You don't have to book in advance for hostels -- you can just show up and hope that they have a room for you. Of course, this is kind of dangerous during peak travel season (during spring break and during the summer), and you might find yourself stranded for a night. But lots of people do travel this way. I think a better way to travel is to book a few nights in advance. That way you can stay flexible and change your plans, but you also know where to go when you arrive in a city.
