Poets Corner Hostel

Sokolska 1, Olomouc
Distance to city center: 0.46km (0.29 mi)

Property Description

A small, homelike hostel, Poets' Corner is located right within Olomouc's stunning old town centre. We offer spacious eight-bed dorms and private rooms, which can be made up as doubles, twins, triples or quads. The rooms are all big and bright, and the beds all have quality mattresses and proper cotton linen (included in the price). There's also a balcony for the smokers, a kitchen for the chefs, laundry service, up-to-date listings of all the cultural events around town, a comfy common room full of armchairs and sofas and lots more.

Olomouc is the old capital of Moravia and is the second largest historic preservation zone in the country, after only Prague. Soaring church towers, winding cobbled back lanes, the ring of parks around the city walls, the UNESCO-listed trinity column and of course the stunning main square with the renaissance town hall and notorious communist astronomical clock are among the finest in Central Europe.

Don't just take our word for it though. Take a peek inside the front cover of the new Eastern Europe Lonely Planet, and you'll see that they've chosen Olomouc as the one highlight of the Czech Republic. Alongside places like Krakow, Budapest, Dubrovnik and Mostar.

Being a university town, there are loads of cheap cafes and bars, and there are some real gems amongst them. For example there's the café with the famous chocolate pie (ask anyone who's been here), and the teahouses, Zen temples of luxury where you ring a bell to order and your chai will be served with a flourish. For nighttime, we have an exclusive guide to two dozen different pubs that we can personally recommend, including the aeroplane bar, the rockclimbing bar and for the freshest beer, the microbrewery just around the corner.

September and October are the best months to visit Olomouc and the surrounding countryside. The university students are back after the summer break and the cultural events are in full swing. The Radetzky weekend, Baroque music festival, and the International organ music festival all take place in September. Also the Ice Hockey is underway and the regular programs of the Jazz cub, Philharmonic Orchestra and the Moravian theatre have resumed. Phew! Add to that crisp autumn days, the changing leaves and fresh Burčak from the street stalls and you can start to see why we like autumn so much.

So you can see that if you're just planning to break up a trip and spend one night with us, you're probably underestimating Olomouc a little; "Wish we could have stayed longer" is the most common phrase in our guestbook. You really need at least three full days to see everything properly and absorb the atmosphere of this magnificent old city, but you're welcome to stay for as short or as long as you like, and we'll do our best to see that you get the most out of it.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Obviously it's easier to find your way if you arrive before dark. If you must arrive late, we recommend printing the map from this or from the hostel's official website.

If you choose to take a taxi from the train station, the fare should be about 100Kc.

Please understand that in such a small homelike hostel it's not practical to have credit card facilities on the premises. We'll ask you to pay in Czech crowns cash upon arrival, so please have enough with you to pay for your entire booking plus an extra 200Kc as a key deposit (which you will receive back when you return the keys on your last day).

If you're coming from the east and Olomouc is your first stop within the country, fear not, for there are bank machines both at the train station and at the tram stop where you will get off in the centre.
