Gyreum

Corlisheen, Sligo

Property Description

The Gyreum is a mammoth round structure with 360 degree views of Sligo's famed cairned mountains with spectacular views of lakes and mountains across 5 counties. It was one of 4 finalists in the prestigious LAMA awards for 2007 for Best Ecological Building in Ireland. It is also Ireland's first Ecolodge to be award the E.U. Flower for environmental and ecological standards.

When Booking PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THE ROOMS DESCRIBED AS 'TWIN ROOM WITH SHARED BATHROOM' and which are excellent value is actually a set of TENTS set up in the main big round hall.

We're also OPEN YEAR ROUND for individuals or groups of tourists or backpackers. We can accomodate 20 people.

The building is also available for hire as a specialised ecolodge/ retreat centre / rehearsal space. Dance, theatre, yoga, and spiritual groups have all hired it as a rehearsal space or workshop centre. Weddings have also taken place here ? both the ceremony & celebration. The place is comfortable and warm. There are 2 cats 1 charming dog and 3 normal toilets and an eco-toilet for the adventurous ones.

It is 100 ft in diameter and aligned to the dawns & dusks of both the Summer and Winter Solstices when beams of light enter into the central hall. It is a perfect destination for hillwalkers, hikers, cyclists and naturalists. It's wonderfully rural & quiet with a couple of quaint old pubs hidden in nearby hills for your Guinness pitstops!
The Winter Solstice dawn alignment is with our nearest cairned hilltop at Si Lu up on the plateau where the Battle of Moytura took place (the tale which inspired George Lucas's STAR WARS: Lugh Lamh Fhada = Luke Skywalker & Balor of the Evil Eye = Darth Vader). Across Lough Arrow from us is Carrrowkeel 'passage tombs,' the oldest of their kind in Europe. The Northwest alignment is with the Summer Solstice dusk at Queen Maeve's 'tomb' on Knocknarae and it is her cairn that the Gyreum in its shape mimics.

Directions

Located 7km from the bus stop at Castle Baldwin (on N4). With forewarning we can depending on car availability collect you from Castlebaldwin and for ?15 from train stations ( Boyle or Collooney).

We are located 16km from Ballymote Train Station and 18km from the Collooney Train Station. Taxis available from both places.

Travelling BY CAR from Dublin head North along N4 to Castle Baldwin which is about 9 miles north of Boyle. Turn RIGHT in Castlebaldwin and stay on this road as it bends to the left, then bends to the right until you come to the Bow & Arrow Pub Cross Roads which has a petrol pump outside and a big old sign saying 'BAR'. Continue STRAIGHTthrough the intersection ( keeping pub on your right side) then through the next Crossroads called KILLADOON Crossroads. Go straight through again and take the next turn LEFT (this turn is half way up the hill and has no warning) and continue down this little road about half a kilometre and you'll find the Gyreum hostel on the RIGHT. There are signs for GYREUM along this route.
