The area's most important places of interest are:
Castellamare del Golfo:
Set in the very fine gulf of Castellammare, at the feet of a high, rugged mountain rich in luxuriant vegetation, the town slopes gently down towards the sea as far as the little peninsula on which there stands the castle, between two magnificent beaches of soft sand.
Scopello? 10 km, 10 min by car:
The ancient seaside town of Scopello is believed to stand on the site of the ancient of Cetaria, where which got this name because of the exceptional abundance of tuna fish in its sea. The Arabs called that place 'Iscubul', and after the destruction of Cetaria they restructured the tuna station.
Now the complex is no longer working -the terrible activity of tuna fishing is no longer lucrative-but everything is still in working order, that is to say the stores, the farms, the boat and nets: they are silent witnesses to an ancient maritime civilisation which has now almost disappeared in the whole of Sicily.
Zingaro Natural Reserve - 12 km, 10 min by car:
The Zingaro is extremely important for the abundance of rare and endemic plants and perhaps even more so for its fauna. The area is also important from the archaeological point of view, seeing that in the spectacular Uzzo grotto there was one of the first prehistoric settlements in Sicily. The reserve is magnificently organised, with paths with precise direction, shelters, water taps, picnic areas, museums, car park, and so forth; there are no roads and it can only be visited on foot.
But Zingaro reserve is also a splendid long line of peaked walls, harsh headlands, underwater grottoes and tunnels, low reefs, narrow valleys, fantastic pebbly sandy beaches that reflect in the uncontaminated sea of constantly changing colours.
Segesta - 20 km, 20 min by car:
Ruins of suggestive beauty: Although archaeological research has not yet provided a reconstruction of the city, it can be deduced from aerial photographs and from the few extant remains that the Geek. Elymian settlement extended along the slopes of Mount Barbaro, enclosed within twin defensive walls.
The theatre: built around the last half of the third century is found on the summit of Mount barbaro. It was layed out in a semicircle 63 meters in diameter.
Unaltered as well is the unusual underground passageway which permitted the actors to appear suddenly before the audience.
Erice - 35 km, 45 min by car:
Erice is a magnificent medieval town, which has remained intact until today. It is a singular synthesis of myth and history, art and culture, landscape and environment, fantasy and reality.
