I'm about to travel for three months and will be staying in mostly hostels. What should I do to make sure things like my iPod, wallet, passport and other valuables don't get lost or stolen? Has anyone ever had a horrible experience with stuff getting stolen at a hostel? I'm new to staying at hostels, so your advice is appreciated.

Look for a hostel that has lockers or drawers with locks. Lots of them offer this option now and you can leave things like your iPod and passport behind while you're going from place to place during the day.

Don't take your laptop. I've heard things about people getting their laptops stolen. I say, keep it at home, people and just go to an internetcafe!!!

How big is this locker? Is it safe to leave luggage in hostels?

I've seen lockers that are dinky little cupboards and others that are pretty large...it really depends on the hostel. But many hostels have secure, locked areas for luggage that are unlikely to be too risky -- the last thing a hostel owner wants is a reputation for a travel robbery! Just be smart and I agree with Falnor82 that you should leave the laptop at home.

I think it's safe to leave luggage in hostels, just not valuables. I did have a pair of my favorite jeans stolen from a hostel once, but that was only a one-time situation and could have taken place in a college dorm or at a hotel.

And, you can lock your rooms.

Funny story: I was in a restaurant in Rome and I got up to use the bathroom. My wife was at the table and my iPod was in front of her on the table. Some jerk tried to swipe it up real quick. Before my wife could say stop, the waiter clocked the guy! I got my iPod and got to watch a wannabe thief get hauled to jail.

The bottom line: valuables are at risk everywhere (even in America). Just keep your eyes open and even if you don't, a good samaritan might save the day.
