Is it possible to go to London and not spend a fortune? I read that the subway there is the equivalent of $8 each way...

You can def go to London on the cheap but you have to be smart. Museums are free and if you have a student ID you can get cheaper deals on transportation passes. Check out http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ for info. Oh, and see a play in London - you can get cheaper tickets than on Broadway.

Get an oyster card too. If you will be using the tube a lot, they can cut back on transportation costs.

You can walk to a lot of places in London (in central London) versus taking mass transit. You'll save bucks and see a lot of the sites.

My tips for London: do prix fixe meals (or better yet, grab kebabs - they're the best in the world), walk everywhere (London is much prettier than people think), and research Time Out London before you go to see what deals are going on while you're there. Eating, drinking and transportation are the most expensive things in London, but you can get around paying an arm and a leg if you plan well!

Oh yeah, prix fixe at pubs is a great way to go. Also, eat food "take away" rather than "eat in" -- you'll save about 50 pence to a pound each time. They charge more for eating in since they have to clean plates etc. Theater is one of the cheapest things in London. Go to Leiscester Square and look for the ticket booths.

    Hi Lola -

Check out Dover Castle Hostel and Bar - they have some longer term arrangements for people planning to stay more than a few days. It's on the south bank, though, so might be a tad less central than you want.
