Located in the midst of Hell's Kitchen, Swiss 1291 Hostel is fun and it's in a prime spot where real New Yorkers eat, drink, and live. The rooms are wealthy with character — they're equipped with colorful comforters and platform beds, TVs, radios, and phones. The doors are painted with funky designs. The high ceilings and large windows compensate for the slight lack of space (this place is just packed to the brim!). You can request ahead too if you'd like more furniture. Downstairs, the bright green TV lounge is adorned with Rothko-style paintings and mismatched couches that reminds you of your first apartment. The kitchen is neat and stocked for a feast. Breakfast is available 24 hours a day. And even in the depths of suburbia, you can still find some botanical relief in the cozy backyard patio with shaded sitting areas, potted plants, and a French chef statue (possibly hijacked from a bistro around the block). A rooftop terrace is open during the summer months. Swiss isn't as much of a no frills hostel as it is one with just the right frills. Apart from all that, the staff is very friendly and international and there's a great bicycle and scooter rental place on-site.
