Friedrichshain

Located south of Prenzlauer Berg and the giant Karl-Marx Allee, Friedrichshain has a decidedly young and artsy vibe. The neighborhood’s austere architecture provides a contrast to the funky café culture. One of the biggest neighborhood draws is the flea market at Boxhagener Platz, which takes place every Sunday.

Kreuzberg

Kreuzberg has a bit of a split personality, with an upscale hipster side and an artsy, multicultural bent as well. Before the Berlin Wall fell, this hood was the hippest in West Berlin. Today, it’s home to many of the city’s immigrants and provides a colorful alternative to the party havens of Friedrichshain and Prenzlauer Berg.

Mitte

Before the fall of the wall, Mitte was the heart of East Berlin. Nowadays, the hood is best known for its landmark buildings, including the Reichstag and the Berliner Dom, and hundreds of art galleries. Mitte is also home to Berlin’s three universities and the stately Unter den Linden boulevard.

Near the Ku'damm

The Kufürstendamm (Ku’damm) is Berlin’s biggest shopping street, boasting the mammoth KaDeWe department store and many more opportunities to max out your card. Aside from prime shopping spots, this neighborhood offers proximity to Charlottenburg (to the north) and Wilmersdorf (to the south).

Prenzlauer Berg

Northeast of Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg is an eclectic mix of cute bars, restaurants, and boho stores. More gentrified than it used to be, the neighborhood is nevertheless a haven for hipster types. Look for the weekly markets at Kollwitzplatz and Helmholtzplatz.

Tiergarten

Hotels in this hood are within walking distance of the lovely, spacious Tiergarten park. Mitte is just to the east.
