  • Treat yourself like royalty by staying at the Albany House, which used to be the Earl of Kildare's residence. Resuscitated to its former grandeur, this Georgian house lets guests feel regal with fine touches and period furniture. Arched doorways, crown molding, and a grand staircase offer old-time majesty which rooms reflect with velvet chairs and white cornices. It all left us dreaming of the Victorian era.

However, take note of the following: The Albany House is a historical landmark, and so, the installation of ramps, elevators, or soundproofed windows is not possible. Even though the hotel is situated on a quiet street, the rooms in back of the house might be the most peaceful option. Sadly though, you'll have to compromise your need for tranquility, since the back rooms are not decorated in the same Georgian style as the rest. Think plain: drop ceilings, bland walls, and lifeless views. If you want to be a hermit, you'll have to live like one.

All 43 old and new en suite rooms have the same amenities: coffeemaker, TV, telephone and wireless connection to the Internet. Breakfast is included in the price, and it's definitely something to write home about. Tell them about the home-baked breads, handmade Irish farm cheese, and fresh fruit compotes. Think the Earl had all that?
