If you make the effort to get to the Bird's Nest near the Deptford train station in London's Southeast quarter, you will be rewarded with one of the city's most unique and lively hostels. While the old furnishings and worn carpets might give you a bad first impression, The Bird's Nest Hostel will win you over with its irresistible charm and affable staff that treat their guests as family. The 40-bed Bird's Nest is a great value, with six-bed dorms starting at less than £10 per night, and four-bed dorms at about £15 per night. (Single sex dorms are available for females only.) This hostel also offers singles and doubles for travelers needing more privacy. The cheap rates include WiFi, linens, and breakfast.
The Bird's Nest is a little far from some parts of the city (Piccadilly Circus is about 40 minutes away by bus) but only about six minutes from the London Bridge, so it's a manageable distance. There is a traditional pub downstairs with live music four nights a week, and a pretty decent food menu as well. This is a place for young people, and particularly musicians, and particularly punk-rock musicians. If you're willing to put up with the weekend noise, we think you'll have a lot of fun.
