You'll love this 17-room hostal located on Calle Calverde. The Calle Valverde is a vibrant street, home to many Spanish stars and starlets who reside there. And, yes there are a few seedy puti clubs (strip joint), one in fact, directly across from Hostal La Fontana.
The small double rooms have twin beds and built-in shelving systems. The curtains are a sheer scarlet color and are complimented by IKEA-like reading lamps and mirrors. The bathrooms, also on the smaller side, have freshly cut orchids in them.
The only thing Fontana seriously lacks is air conditioning, with ceiling fans trying their best to make do during stickier summer months.
Have great difficulty understanding the other reviews of this place. they don't correspond to my experience of it at all. First, the actual room does not resemble the photographs on the website. It's very small and having the toilet bowl, shower, sink and bed in the one room exposed to one another is actually a little distasteful. something I didn't realise myself until I stayed in the place. It is situated in a seedy street just off Gran V?a. It?s noisy. Apart from the heat one associates with Madrid I was also kept awake by a neighbour having a noisy and repetitive argument at one o?clock in the morning. I thought the (South American) staff was rude and obnoxious. This is the first time in my life I?ve ever felt compelled to give a review like this. It?s a hole, the place creeped me out and I?m sure you could get much better for the same price elsewhere in Madrid. If you can?t, then pay more! You don?t want to stay here.

My only problem with this hostel is that my friend and I (we are both young girls) were locked outside the main doors for over 20 minutes after 1 am. We were very lucky that two other guests were waiting with us but we were nervous and scared.
Other than that, the location was unbeatable and the staff was great.
