The Basics: Heart of Amsterdam

The Basics: Hortus
Located in Plantagebuurt, about a twenty-minute walk from Amsterdam’s Central Station and just ten-minutes on foot from the Rembrandt House Museum, the Hortus is a one-star hotel that’s well poised for traveling to the main city sights.

Hostel Description: Situated directly across the street from the expansive (and super fun!) Artis Zoo in Amsterdam’s Plantagebuurt neighborhood, the Hostel Centraal is a small hostel offering 14 rooms for backpackers ages 18-28.

Hostel Description: Located in the rollicking Red Light District, the Hostel the Globe Center is not for light sleepers. The place is equally known for its rooms and its late night sports bar. 

Hostel Description: The Hostel Utopia is a simple place with rooms for bunking up and lighting up. It’s centrally located in Amsterdam’s Red Light District and has a minimum age requirement of 18.

The Basics: Hotel Mevlana
The Mevlana Hostel is a smallish place located in Amsterdam’s historic center. It’s got great proximity to all the major sights and offers 17 clean, comfy rooms for less.

Hostel Description: Centrally located near all of the Museumplein’s cultural attractions, the Inner Amsterdam hostel is a solid choice with all the basics included: Linen, breakfast, and Internet access are free. 

The Basics: International Budget Hostel
Located in the Southern Canal district—it’s close to Leidesplein, Dam Square and the Van Gogh Museum— the International Budget Hostel offers a variety of dorm rooms, all with shared facilities. 

Hostel Description: The Janson Hotel, located just outside Amsterdam’s canal ring, but near the Van Gogh Museum and within walking distance of Vondelpark, is a budget hotel that offers cheap bunks too.

Hostel Description: Poised near a canal in Amsterdam’s busting Western Canal Ring, with easy access to major city sights as well as Central Station, the Hotel My Home is a budget one-star that offers dorm rooms and cheap, private twins.

The Basics: Orfeo
Located within a ten-minute walk of some of Amsterdam’s most prized museums—including the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijks Museum—the Hostel Orfeo is a convenient not to mention budget-friendly place to stay.

The Basics: Passenger Ship Maria Alberta
Docked in Amsterdam’s Nautisch Kwartier (Nautical Corner) near Central Station, the Passenger Ship Maria Alberta provides a B&B-style option, from communal breakfast to ship cabin lodgings, for those wanting to spend a unique night in Amsterdam.

Hostel Description: Shelter City is a Christian hostel that’s centrally located near Amsterdam's Dam Platz and most major sights.  It’s a friendly place with lots of cheap-and-cheerful room types on offer.

Hostel Description: The Shelter Jordan is a Christian-run hostel situated in the Western Canal Ring of Amsterdam’s city center. From here, it’s easy to get to and from most major sights.

Hostel Description: Centrally located just around the corner from the famous Heineken Brewery in Amsterdam’s Southern Canal Ring, the one-star Sphinx Hotel is a basic choice with few extras. Amenities aside, It’s convenient to many tram stops and other major city sights.

The St. Christopher’s at the Winston is a well-known hostel that’s centrally located in Amsterdam’s Red Light District. Rooms are designed by various artists and many feature original artwork. 

The Basics: Stayokay Amsterdam Stadsdoelen
The Stayokay Stadsdoelen is part of the Stayokay hostel chain. This one, situated in the Southern Canal Ring, is the most central of the bunch. The property offers 176 beds within walking distance of many of the ‘Dam’s most major sights.
